Tissue bundles, bar soap, cotton pads, detergent refills and sterile medical pouches look unrelated. Their packaging problems are closely related, though. Each product needs a paper that resists one or two specific threats, such as moisture, oil, contamination or mechanical stress, while still running cleanly on a converting line.
Many sourcing mistakes begin with a request such as "we need kraft" or "we need glassine." A more reliable approach is to list how the pack can fail and then choose the property and test that controls it. The table below shows this logic for common daily necessities.
| Product | Most likely failure | Property to control | Useful test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bar soap | Oil and fragrance bleed through the wrap and leave stains | Grease resistance | Kit test (TAPPI T 559) |
| Tissue and napkin bundles | Humidity pick-up, wrinkling, soft or crushed packs | Surface water absorption, stiffness | Cobb (ISO 535), basis weight (ISO 536) |
| Detergent and cleaner refills | Seam burst or corner puncture during transport | Burst and tensile strength | ISO 2759, ISO 1924-2 |
| Cosmetic inner wraps | Dull print, uneven ink laydown, visible grease marks | Surface smoothness, light grease barrier | Bekk smoothness (ISO 5627), Kit test |
| Sterile medical pouches | Sterilant does not penetrate, or the seal fails | Porosity, seal integrity, clean peel | Package validation under ISO 11607 |
The ranges below are the typical figures Targanix publishes for each grade. Treat them as a starting point and confirm them against the datasheet for the exact reel you plan to buy. The final column covers the practical limits that spec sheets often leave out.
| Grade | Typical basis weight | Strongest at | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraft Paper | 60 to 180 gsm | Tensile and burst strength; bleached and unbleached options; barrier coatings available | Uncoated kraft absorbs moisture and oil. Specify the coating if the product is wet or oily. |
| Glassine Paper | 30 to 90 gsm | Grease resistance, gloss, smooth surface | Grease resistance does not guarantee a water barrier. Check how it behaves at your storage humidity. |
| Translucent Paper | 40 to 90 gsm | Premium appearance with a light grease barrier | Low opacity shows whatever is behind it, including adhesive, folds and product residue. |
| Medical Packaging Paper | 60 to 120 gsm | Porosity for sterilant penetration, seal integrity, clean peel | The paper alone does not make a compliant pack. The whole packaging system must be validated. |
| Dialysis Paper | 50 to 90 gsm | Sterile barrier with low particle emission; stated EtO and gamma compatibility | Confirm sterilization method, dose and aging requirements with your own validation data. |
| Hygiene Cast Film | 15 to 40 gsm | Soft, breathable layer for diapers, incontinence and feminine hygiene products | This is a polymer film rather than a fiber sheet. Evaluate it on moisture vapor transmission and skin-contact compliance, not on paper tests. |
A datasheet number only helps if you know what it predicts. These are the tests that most often decide whether a paper works in daily necessities packaging.
| Parameter | Standard method | What it tells you in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ISO 1924-2 | Resistance to web breaks on form-fill-seal and roll-fed lines. Compare machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) separately, because a strong MD value can hide a weak CD. |
| Burst strength | ISO 2759 | Resistance to pressure from inside a pack, such as a heavy refill pouch or a hardware bundle. |
| Cobb water absorption | ISO 535 | How much liquid water the surface takes up in a set time. A lower value means better surface resistance, but it is not a measure of water vapor transmission. |
| Oil resistance (Kit) | TAPPI T 559 | Ability to resist penetration by a graded series of test liquids. Relevant to soap, cosmetic and cleaning-product wraps. |
| Smoothness (Bekk) | ISO 5627 | Ink transfer quality. Match it to your printing process, since gravure, flexo and offset respond differently. |
| Moisture content | ISO 287 | Reel stability. Paper that is too dry or too damp can curl, cockle or run unevenly. The published standard range is 4% to 8%. |
| Opacity | ISO 2471 | How much shows through the sheet. Standard grades range from 80% to 98%, and translucent grades are deliberately lower. |
One point is easy to overlook: a single number never describes a whole barrier. A paper can score well on the Kit test and still lose strength or flatness at high relative humidity. Ask for results at the conditions your pack will see, such as a humid warehouse, a refrigerated chain or a bathroom shelf, and not only at standard laboratory conditions.
Many production problems blamed on "bad paper" come from how the paper meets the line. Four habits reduce most of them:
For consumer goods, paper selection is mostly a performance and cost decision. For sterile medical packaging it is also a regulatory one. ISO 11607-1 sets requirements for materials and sterile barrier systems, and ISO 11607-2 covers validation of forming, sealing and assembly processes. In practice, the medical manufacturer must show that the finished pack maintains sterility through sterilization, storage and transport. A supplier's paper is one input to that evidence, so request the technical documentation early and plan validation time into the project.
Sterilization method also matters. Ethylene oxide depends on gas passing through the paper, so porosity is critical. Gamma irradiation can change polymer and fiber properties over time, so aging studies are worth including. Targanix states that its Dialysis Paper is compatible with both methods, and you should still check this against your own validated process.
Soap, cotton pads and cosmetic inserts are not always regulated as food contact, but confectionery and some personal-care items may be. Targanix lists selected grades, including Glassine Paper and barrier-coated Kraft Paper, as available with food-contact certification to EU Regulation 10/2011 and FDA requirements. Regulation 10/2011 is formally a plastics regulation, so for paper-based and coated materials it is wise to confirm exactly which declaration of compliance applies.
For sustainability, request evidence rather than labels alone. A useful checklist is an FSC chain-of-custody certificate for the specific supply, the bleaching method (ECF or TCF), the coating type and a statement on recyclability in your target market. Recyclability depends on the coating and on local collection and sorting systems. The same paper can be accepted in one country and rejected in another. Targanix describes its approach on the Sustainability page.
| Product category | Suggested grade | Barrier need | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby diapers and wipes | Hygiene Cast Film | Breathable, moisture vapor | Skin-contact compliance, softness, noise |
| Facial tissue and napkins | Kraft Paper | Moisture resistance | Stiffness, print quality, stack stability |
| Bar soap | Glassine Paper | Grease and oil | Kit level against your fragrance and oil content |
| Cosmetics and skincare | Translucent Paper | Light grease barrier, print surface | Show-through, smoothness, ink adhesion |
| Detergent refills | Kraft Paper (barrier-coated) | Moisture, vapor, grease | Burst strength, seal behavior, compatibility with contents |
| Sterile medical devices | Medical Packaging Paper | Sterile barrier (ISO 11607) | Seal strength, peel behavior, validated aging |
| Dialysis products | Dialysis Paper | Porosity, sterile integrity | Particle emission, sterilization compatibility |
Is glassine always the best choice for oily products?
Not always. It performs very well against grease, but if the product is also moisture-sensitive or the pack needs high burst strength, a coated kraft may suit better. Test against your actual formulation.
Can one paper serve several product lines?
Sometimes, if the lines share a similar machine and barrier need. Consolidating grades can simplify purchasing, but only after the weakest-case product passes its trial.
What order quantity should I plan for?
According to Targanix, standard catalog grades typically start from 500 kg per SKU, while custom-coated or barrier-treated papers may need higher volumes. Contact the team for a quote based on your specification.
